Much has been written about the latest novel from Sarah Pinborough. The #WTFTHATENDING hashtag was a regular occurrence on my Twitter feed when first the book was released, though I tried to distance myself from the book talk whenever possible to avoid spoilers. I succeeded, and in doing so found Behind Her Eyes to be riveting, weird, well-written, fast-paced and a damn fine novel overall.
Though the main cast of the book is quite small, Louise, Adele and David-the trio at the centre of everything-are explored in thorough detail. What we have is three very different characters that are fully fleshed-out. There are times when you will feel a connection with these characters and at other times you will be totally distanced, you will be constantly second guessing. It is great writing. Behind Her Eyes starts off with its feet firmly in thriller territory, but as the plot thickens you begin to realise that all is not well and somebody is playing a dangerous game. Pinborough cleverly weaves together a twisted narrative and the payoff at the end is nothing short of dynamite!
The short chapters told from different viewpoints work well and I never for one moment felt as if the novel’s pace lagged. In fact, the pacing is excellent throughout and though often I felt I had the novel all figured out, I still never really knew who exactly was telling the truth. The curve-ball ending is a doozy and I did not see coming at all. Often books feature a “twist at the end”, and sometimes it can leave the reader rolling their eyes. With Behind Her Eyes the final few chapters are really quite superb.
This really is a top, top novel. It is one filled with suspense, great characters, a wicked ending and it will keep you on your toes for the entire ride. Believe the hype. Highly recommended reading.
5/5 twists of lemon (or is it lime?) from the Grim Reader.
