Book review: Tower of the Forgotten – Mitchell Hogan

It’s TBR Tuesday once again, where I pick a random book from my Kindle, read it and review it. Today, it’s the turn of Mitchell Hogan (no relation to Hulk) and his prequel novella, Tower of the Forgotten.

Now, I don’t read much in the way of fantasy, especially what I describe as high fantasy, which I think this is. In fact, Tower of the Forgotten is definitely that: magic, heroes, villains, demons, etc…and, you know, I really quite enjoyed myself. This prequel novella to a new series coming later this year from Hogan isn’t going to rewrite the fantasy fiction rulebook. But, that’s okay, because Hogan’s prose is smooth as silk, very readable and he gives the reader enough from his characters for you to want to carry on with them on their journey. It’s just a really good fantasy novella.

The novella is well-paced and exciting, thanks to some great action scenes. Master swordsman, Niklaus, is on a mission to kill a tainted sorcerer, but things don’t go according to plan (do they ever?), and Niklaus’ assassination attempt leads to the unleashing of a monstrous demon. Niklaus unwillingly joins forces with a local thief, Sly Diamond (I know, terrible name!) and together they must escape the demons wrath and dispose of it!

All in all, I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Maybe because I haven’t read any fantasy books for a while. The characters were very solid, (though Niklaus is an arrogant sod), the world intriguing, and a smattering of gore made me a happy reader. I am keen for the first novel, Revenant Winds, coming later this year. So, job well done Mr Hogan!

4/5 magic potions from the Grim Reader.
