Book 3 in the ‘Severed Empire’ series sees Mykal and Blodwyn embark upon a journey to the Cordillera realm again where the dead king’s two daughters now hold court. A series of disappearances sees our two heroes requested by the queens to investigate these strange occurrences. Not all is as it seems in the cold realm as somebody seeks to interfere with the investigation and bring about the end for Mykal and Blodwyn.
After the first book in this YA series ‘Wizard’s Rise’, book 2 ‘Wizard’s War’ was an action-packed tale of epic fantasy and one I really enjoyed. Things take a more laid back approach with book three featuring a little less action but a whole lot more mystery and some truly interesting characters. The two queens are both very different from each other, Queen Sarah seems much more accommodating of our two heroes, whilst queen Raaheel is very short tempered and shrouded in mystery. The chamberlain Gembert is a difficult character to pin down in that he seems torn between his love for queen Sarah and his role in the kingdom. He is also very mysterious and cunning, though he does reveal a different side later on in the book. Mykal is becoming much more confident with his magic and has done away with the ‘I don’t want all this responsibility’ stuff that featured in the first book. Blodwyn continues to be a father figure to him, offering council and guidance and he can still kick some serious butt, though it feels as if time is beginning to catch up with him.
The focus on solving the mystery of the disappearances is intriguing and the revelation at the books close suggests that the series might be moving into darker territories in the future, much to my delight. ‘Queens of Osiris’ is another good read in the series. The book isn’t as long as the previous two and works well because of it. Everything is tied together nicely and like I said earlier there are more adventures to come. Tomasso’s writing is clear and uncluttered. There is more than enough meat on the bones of the characters and the pacing is great. All in all if you are looking for a YA epic fantasy series to get stuck into then the ‘Severed Empire’ series should put a smile on your face.

Statement from the Author
I do hope people will jump in and give the Severed Empire novels a chance. While categorized as Young Adult Fantasy Fiction, the books are meant for readers of any age. Between the pages there is magic, dragons, pirates, and other fantastical creatures. The adventures within the realms created are endless. And, hopefully, timeless.
Queen’s of Osiris, Synopsis
TWO YEARS AFTER THE WAR HAS ENDED
Since the demise of the Mountain King, Hermon Cordillera’s daughters have stepped up and share the throne as queens of the Osiris Realm. But when women go missing from the kingdom they are unable to find whoever is responsible for the growing number of abductions. . . .
CENTURIES AGO, WIZARDS INVESTIGATED CRIMES THE CROWN COULDN’T SOLVE.
Mykal, the young wizard, continues honing his magical skills with his mother, and his tactical training with Blodwyn, his oldest friend. Living in secret within the ancient library ruins, they are surprised when a young woman shows up asking them for help.
Mykal and Blodwyn return to Cordillera’s castle, this time as allies. Tasked with unraveling the mystery, they soon realize there isn’t much evidence pointing in any direction. They are ill prepared for the untold dangers that await them. It will come down to more than Mykal’s magic if they hope to survive, and if they want to resolve the case of Osiris’ abducted people.
Biography of Phillip Tomasso
Phillip Tomasso is the award-winning author of over 19 novels. He began his career writing mystery and suspense novels in 2000. Since, he has gone on to publish books in a wide variety of genres, including Horror, Young Adult, Science Fiction, and Fantasy.
His first short story was published in 1995, and he was paid a penny a word. It was an 8,000-word western.
However, it being a Canadian publication—and at a time, when the U.S. dollar was worth more—his check was for just under $40. It was a great starting point, and has been selling regularly since then.
Although not a full-time writer, Tomasso works a full-time job as well. After 19 years at Kodak as an employment law paralegal, he’s spent the last six plus years a Fire/EMS Dispatcher for 9-1-1. He works the midnight shift, First Platoon, and has found the hours conducive to his creativity.
Tomasso prefers to both read books in the same genres he writes. He has been inspired by the likes of Walter Mosley, the entire Easy Rawlins series. Anything by Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Robin Cook, John Saul, Warren Hammond, Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, Charlie Huston’s Joe Pitt novels, and Jim Butcher’s Dresden series. Just to name a few!
Tomasso lives in Rochester, NY with his 3 kids—who are not little any longer. Aside from reading and writing, Tomasso plays guitar, and is a self-admitted horrible singer. He is always at work on a next novel. For more information, visit Tomasso’s website, follow him on Twitter, and find him on Facebook.
Praise for Phillip Tomasso (cross genre)
“I’d say that Wizard’s Rise has more of a young adult feel to it than a darker fantasy, and has an appealing, clean voice. Phillip has a way with writing words and scenes that flow and are easy to understand, and younger readers will be able to devour this. Adults will enjoy it as well as a solid first book in a series by a terrific author. If you’re a fan of RA Salvatore, Weis/Hickman, Sanderson and any of the other great voices in fantasy give Wizard’s Rise and Phillip a shot. You’ll enjoy the time you give his work.” Chris, Amazon reviewer
“This is different … confident, addictive storytelling, great characters, and an intriguing plot. You’ll read it fast but remember it for a long time. ” —Lee Child, best-selling author of One Shot and the Jack Reacher series
“(Tomasso) takes the standard fare of the private investigator genre and adds twists and turns to make it anything but standard. Tomasso’s writing is crisp and clear … thoroughly enjoyable.” —Joseph Nassise, author of Internal Games and King of the Dead
“Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island is one of my all time favorite adventure yarns . . . Tomasso has managed to preserve Stevenson’s characters and pacing as the story enters this terrifying new adventure into the land of the living dead. I hadn’t counted on loving this story
as much as I did, but it surprised me and delighted me and terrified me every time I turned the page. Great adventure, great thrills, and a terrifying glimpse into the jaws of death. Highly recommended!” –Joe McKinney, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Dog Days and Plague of the Undead
“Blood River is a thrilling blast of cryptozoological fun, a wild ride down tropical rivers in pursuit of a terrifying legend. It will leave you hungry for the next catch!” –David Sakmyster, author of The Pharaohs Objective and Jurassic Dead
