Before I went into this I had never read Nick Webb’s ‘Legacy Fleet’ books. The Kindle Worlds series is a collection of fan fiction stories based in the ‘Legacy Fleet’ world. I am familiar with the two writers here through their work they have done in the horror genre and was keen to get a copy of this, despite not being a huge science-fiction fan.

The good news is that it’s a quick read, and there is barely any let-up in action, particularly during the earlier parts of the book when we are thrown into a battle between the people trying to flee United Earth and the alien horde (the Swarm). We are scattered around to various ships and scenarios with different characters as they try and escape and the chapters are nice and short which adds to the chaotic feeling of these opening scenes.

This trend seems to carry on throughout the book and I did find it to be distracting. One minute I am on the Warrior, then it’s down to Earth, then back to the Warrior and so on. Things settle down a little for the second half of the book where a bit more of a look at the politics of what is happening emerge.

I imagine some of the characters are those from the ‘Legacy Fleet’ books, so it is difficult to say if they are a good reflection of those people or not. The characters in general are pretty good, fleshed out enough to give them some personality and make you care about their destinies. I kind of felt like I was reading a written adaption of Independence Day, which If you like full-throttle space battles and one-liners then you will love this.

I’m not really sure how to rate this. Based upon my own enjoyment of it i’d give it a very solid 3.5 stars.

Pick up a copy of ‘Vengeance’ from here.
