Grey Matter Press are one of my favourite publishers of dark fiction. John C. Foster is fast becoming one of my favourite writers. So, when I heard that the two of them were collaborating on the release of what would be Grey Matter Press’ first full novel, you can probably guess that I was suitably excited.

‘Mister White’ started off as a short story that appeared in the Anthology ‘Dark Visions Volume 2: A Collection of Modern Horror’ I actually only read it when it was released not long ago as a Kindle single. I absolutely loved it! I pre-ordered the ebook from the publisher and was delighted when it arrived ahead of it’s official release date of April 5th.

With ‘Mister White’ John C. Foster has created a dark, supernatural thriller that has the potential to be a real breakthrough book. It has all of the elements required for the novel to appeal to horror fans, whilst being commercial enough to appeal to thriller fans as well. Just like with any great book the opening chapter sucks you in and doesn’t let go. In Mister White Foster has created a wraith like entity that induces nerve-shredding fear whenever he makes an appearance. The story follows a family trying to reconnect with each other. Lewis (a spy) is trying to reach his partner Catherine and daughter Hedde. Unfortunately so is Mister White! a phantom being that kills without remorse all who speak his name. The scenes with Mister White are incredibly tense and frightening. Little is known about him and this makes it all the more intriguing. The pacing of the novel is superb. Foster doesn’t overload you with information, instead allowing the reader to put the pieces of the puzzle together for themselves. The characters are excellent and the ending is one of the best I have ever read. It gave me the goose bumps, something I haven’t had from a book in a long, long time. It is a real WTF moment!

There has been a lot of hype surrounding this book. Lots of blurbs from people I respect and enjoy reading. Could ‘Mister White’ possibly live up to expectation?……You bet! This book delivers in spades. It is the best book John C. Foster has written and what a book to release as your first novel from Grey Matter Press! My only concern is what Mr Foster does next. How can he possibly top this?

It’s over to you, John. Though I am sure you have a few more tricks up your sleeve.

Book of 2016 so far? You bet. Brilliant.
